With the advent of disposable paper handkerchiefs, we unfairly forgot about the good old fabric handkerchiefs. Decorated with embroidery, monograms or drawings, handkerchiefs for centuries were not only personal hygiene items, but an important part of the wardrobe – they emphasized the privileged position of their owners. No wonder Sheremetyev had more than 300 of them!

Since the 16th century, there has been a secret language of handkerchiefs, with the help of which, without uttering a word, one could express favor, antipathy and other emotions. For example, a handkerchief pressed to the lips meant a desire to meet, lowered down – sympathy, wrapped around the arm – indifference, on the knees – a declaration of love, stretched with fingers – hatred…

Initially handkerchiefs were white, their shape varied. Only in 1685, by decree of Louis XIV, squares of fine cotton, cambric or muslin, familiar to us “equal in length and width”, decorated with lace and embroidery, appeared.

Handkerchief production was considered a certain form of leisure – in different countries, women gathered in special clubs, where, in addition to needlework, news were shared. In 2006, Tamar Koven decided to renew this good tradition in order not only to revive the fashion for cambric handkerchiefs, but also to help embroiderers improve their well-being without leaving home. This is how the Tamielle brand was born.

Small cambric squares – men’s 40×40 and women’s 30×30 – are hand-made by craftswomen from Bulgaria. For example, Ivanka “Ferrari” sews them at home and irons them in her own flowering garden. Then the hoops are decorated with colorful patterns and pictures. Embroidery or print (and sometimes both) are traditionally placed in one corner of the handkerchief . Motifs for decor can be completely different. For women, most often these are flowers, cute trinkets or items of clothing, for men – sports paraphernalia, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, bottles of alcohol and even seductive pin-up girls…

In cooperation with the embroiderers of the island of Madagascar, the Monogram collection appeared with gracefully decorated initials on scarves. Tamar admits that she drew inspiration for this and other collections from an old book that was bought in Moscow.

Handkerchiefs are neatly and stylishly packed in cardboard boxes: for women – in white, for men – in craft. A business card with the name of the embroiderer must be placed in each, confirming 100% handmade work. These pocket squares can become a favorite accessory or a touching memento for family and friends.
