The history of the Forge of Miracles (La Fucina dei Miracolli) begins in 1975. Vincenzo Della Croce, at that time a theater actor, himself makes twenty carnival masks from papier-mâché for the premiere of the performance, and then gives them to the Venetian shop “Il Prato”. The masks are sold out in one day. Then orders begin to arrive regularly, and Vincenzo opens a workshop in which new Venetian masks, carnival and decorative, are born.
The masks are created using the papier-mâché technique entirely by hand (from soaking paper, making a mold, drying, ironing, priming and polishing to the inscription on the back “made by hand, “Forge of Miracles”), decorated with painting, Swarovski crystals, lace, cabochons, silk tassels, are decorated with gold and silver dust (sequins then remain on the face and clothes, like a memory of a fairy tale).
New models are created by Lucia della Croce, wife of Vincenzo, the names of new masks are invented by all art studios, and then the masks are sent to Venice, Paris, Las Vegas, Switzerland, Moscow and Riga.
And since the imagination of artists is rich and tireless, Lucia and Vincenzo come up with new collections, just as elegantly decorated, just as magical and unique. These are decorative bowls and papier-mâché Easter eggs, Murano glass bookmarks and… hot air balloons. Hot air balloons, like the new Covidine masks (not covering the upper part of the face, but – in the traditions of our time – the mouth, nose and chin), the artists came up with in pandemic times. As a symbol of freedom and beauty, which is always with us.
All works of the Fucina dei Miracolli workshop have an author’s certificate.
